This scene was from a documentary by Marlon Riggs called “Tongues Untied” (1989). Riggs was a poet, filmmaker, teacher, and activist and his film work was made at the height of the AIDS crisis in the US. It explored homosexuality, racism, and identity in the black community in that era. It was mostly serious but he obviously had a great sense of humor too. This clip is funny but “Tongues Untied” was also really groundbreaking in it’s day. It’s out on DVD. Riggs passed away in 1994.

Thanks to the Drag Mansion and Sally for getting the ball rolling on this performance concept! Peep Show February 1st was a blast and, despite some unintended wardrobe malfunctions just before hitting the stage, the number went off alright. Thanks to all who came and shared the moment and for the rest here is a video.

Hero is such a dramatic word, let alone a title, but sometimes it is the right choice. For me, Justin Bond has been at the top of my list of inspirations through out my explorations of gender and sexuality. V is a beautiful human being with a heart that breaths prideful life into queer identities outside of the gender binary. Justin Vivian Bond can be seen as the “Mistress of Shortbus” in which v brings hilarity and grace to a character who exists in a world of accepted gender fluidity. If you haven’t seen the wonderful film Shortbus, please find it and watch it soon, you will be grateful that you did. There is so much more I could say about Mx Justin Vivian Bond but for now there is one topic of interest I would like to bring to light.

Fairly recently Justin began taking hormones as part of an effort to fulfill v’s desires to live fully as a trans-person. Justin prefers the pronoun V, prefix mx, and a gender identity of T or trans.

I just wanted to share the inspiration I find in Justin Bond, a person whose life, art, and expression brings me strength and hope, along with a deep sigh of longing <3.

Make sure to visit V’s website and watch Shortbus.
